poppies 10.09 018

For as long as I can remember I have had a great love for the poppy flower, and have grown them in my gardens all my adult life. These poppies are an oriental variety, I actually planted them at the end of the season last year, needless to say they didn’t get to bloom then. But this spring they are flowering, and it seems that they have mutated. The flowers are huge, they span 19 cms (7 1/2 inches). Their pretty  crepe paper petals rise out from centres of deep pools of velvety purple and their stamens are heavily laden with pollen. They are just gorgeous, their colours are luscious and rich. I was slightly disappointed that they didn’t show their faces last year, but good things come to those who wait, and so today, I have a handful of the most delicious spring poppies to enjoy.  Life is good!! ~ Sally x
